Indonesia’s risk profile for travel insurance is shaped by geography. The country sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire โ€” volcanic activity (Merapi, Batur, Bromo, Rinjani, and others) can disrupt flights and close routes with limited notice โ€” and the island geography means that reaching quality medical care from a remote location requires evacuation time and cost. The combination of outdoor activity culture (surfing, diving, hiking, volcano-watching) and variable local medical infrastructure makes comprehensive insurance more important here than in most destinations.

Medical evacuation is the critical coverage category. The BIMC Hospital in Kuta and the Siloam Hospitals group in Bali and Jakarta are internationally accredited and English-speaking; they handle the majority of tourist medical incidents competently. But a serious dive accident requiring a recompression chamber, a motorbike accident on a mountain road near Ubud, or a hiking injury on Rinjani’s summit path can all generate an evacuation scenario before you reach Bali’s quality hospitals. Medical evacuation from Lombok or Flores to Bali costs IDR 15-50 million (ยฃ700-ยฃ2,500); from Bali to Singapore (for truly serious cases) runs $20,000-$40,000 USD. A policy with at least ยฃ500,000 in evacuation cover is the baseline.

Scuba diving requires specific attention. Bali, the Gili Islands, Flores (Komodo, Manta Point), and Ambon are all world-class dive destinations, and dive accidents โ€” nitrogen narcosis, decompression illness, barotrauma โ€” are distinct medical events that require recompression treatment. The nearest decompression chamber to the Gili Islands is in Bali (three to four hours away). Most standard consumer policies exclude scuba diving beyond recreational depth (18 metres) or require a specific endorsement. If diving is part of the plan, confirm the policy covers it explicitly to the depth you’ll be diving, and confirm the evacuation coverage applies in remote island contexts. EKTA’s adventure sports endorsement covers recreational scuba to depths standard for guided resort diving.

Volcano disruption has affected Bali’s international airport multiple times in the last decade: Agung’s eruption phases in 2017-2018 closed DPS for days at a time and stranded thousands of passengers. A policy covering flight cancellation and accommodation costs during a natural disaster event is useful for Bali specifically. Most comprehensive travel policies cover this under trip interruption for natural disasters; confirm the policy does not require a formal government travel advisory to be active before the clause applies (some policies do, which means a volcanic closure that doesn’t trigger an FCO advisory doesn’t trigger the clause either).

Motorbike accidents are the most common cause of serious injury for Bali tourists. The same pattern as Thailand applies: operating a bike without the appropriate licence invalidates most insurance claims. Ubud and Canggu’s scooter culture is everywhere, and the temptation is obvious, but the coverage gap is real. Adventure activity baggage and electronics theft are the secondary claims โ€” beach bag theft at Kuta and Seminyak, camera theft from motorbike side bags, and room theft at cheap guesthouses all generate claims.

EKTA covers Indonesia with the high medical evacuation limit, the adventure sports framework, and the mobile English claims process โ€” the three features that matter most for this specific destination. Buy the policy with the diving endorsement confirmed before booking any dive trips, and declare any pre-existing conditions at purchase to protect the claim validity.
