Venice is the one Italian city where the standard orientation advice — pick a neighbourhood, learn the transit, read the metro map — is mostly wrong. By mid-morning it fills fast. Summer vaporetto lines 1 and 2 become very crowded from the train station; lines 5.1 and 5.2 take the longer perimeter route and are consistently less packed.

For the outer islands, the consensus is to arrive before 10:30 a.m. and stay until after sunset rather than doing a quick loop. Burano is the colourful-houses island with cosy restaurants; Murano is where the glass-blowing tradition, centuries old, is still practised.

The defining Venetian street food is cicchetti — bite-sized crostini topped with seafood, meat, or vegetables, served in bacari around the Rialto Bridge and Fish Market. Prosecco and Bardolino are the regional wines to order alongside. One important logistics note: book dinner reservations before you arrive. Venice is among the busiest cities in Italy and same-day reservations are genuinely difficult to secure.

Two nights is the minimum that allows you to separate the San Marco circuit from the neighbourhood wandering. Three gives you a half-day on the islands without feeling rushed.

Skip the gondola along the Grand Canal as a primary sightseeing vehicle — the €2 traghetto crossing at Santa Sofia is the local option and takes you across the same water. Piazza San Marco at midday in summer is worth skipping entirely; the early-morning version is a different place.
