Test Anxiety

Understanding and managing test anxiety for secondary school students โ€” physiological responses, reframing techniques, and pre-exam routines.

Test anxiety is not the same as being nervous before an exam. Nervousness is a normal response to an important event and at moderate levels it improves performance. Test anxiety is the version that impairs performance: the mind going blank when the paper arrives, physical symptoms (heart rate, nausea, shaking) that interfere with thinking, and a cognitive load occupied by catastrophic thoughts rather than the exam questions in front of you. It is common at secondary school, it is underreported because students rarely name it to teachers or parents, and it is addressable through specific techniques rather than general reassurance. This course covers three categories of intervention. First, the physiological: controlled breathing (specifically the 4-7-8 pattern, or simple box breathing) reduces the physical arousal response within minutes and can be done at the desk before the paper is turned over. Second, the cognitive: reframing the interpretation of anxiety symptoms โ€” research by Alison Wood Brooks at Harvard showed that telling yourself “I am excited” rather than “I am anxious” before a performance task produced measurable improvement in outcomes. Third, the procedural: having a reliable pre-exam routine (same breakfast, arriving at a consistent time, a specific sequence before reading the paper) reduces the number of decisions that generate anxiety on the day. The course also covers what to do when the mind goes blank mid-paper: a specific recovery sequence rather than panicking.
